Piper J-3: A Member of the Family

0

With the 75th anniversary of the Piper Cub upon us, there were lots of good Cub stories around Sun ‘n Fun this year. One of our favorites, as described in this podcast with Bob Jones, is a 1946 J-3 that became a member of Jones’ family for several generations. Jones’ father was a duster pilot and bought the airplane from Southern Airways, which had used it as a trainer in the civil pilot training program. His Dad bought the airplane for $725.

Bob Jones first flew in the airplane at the tender age of six weeks, in his Mom’s lap in the back seat. In the years since, three generations have learned to fly in the airplane and Jones keeps it on a residential strip where he can fly it a couple of times a week. The airplane has a Continental 85 that’s been converted to 100 HP and has an absolutely pristine cover and paint job.
