July 29, 2002

NewsWire  NEWSWIRE: AVweb's in-depth illustrated aviation news coverage.
  • As you read this, many of the remaining pilots at EAA AirVenture are checking weather and making plans to head home from the 50th annual fly-in.
  • Mooney Aircraft Company (MAC) CEO Roy Norris told reporters at EAA AirVenture that over the past 15 days, the company has received more than 240 inquiries.
  • Given the choice, would you rather own a plane equipped with an emergency parachute or without?
  • There was some vindication for CarterCopter boss Jay Carter on Friday at AirVenture, but more important than the long-anticipated first public flight is what it could all mean.
  • Builders of the X-COR EZ-Rocket, which is test flown by Dick Rutan, Saturday announced they have 600 bookings for suborbital flights on the next incarnation of the rocket plane.
  • Bohannon and crew were hoping to capture three separate records Sunday for piston engine aircraft including the time to climb to 12,000 meters, but at 27,500 feet, the engine went to idle, possibly signaling a turbo line disconnect.
  • From the long line of Husky products comes the 160-hp Husky Pup, a J3 Cub look- and act-alike.

Columns COLUMNS: As The Beacon Turns: Skipping Through the Mine Field
Avoiding the growing number of TFRs (temporary flight restrictions) has become both more important and more difficult lately. Even a VFR flight in the more-remote Rocky Mountains has the potential to bust a TFR if you're not paying close attention, constantly checking with the FSS, and not trusting their analysis of the TFR's position relative to your course. AVweb's Michael Maya Charles guides us through these hazards in this month's edition of As The Beacon Turns.
News NEWS: After Five Years, It's Time to Fly
In August of 1997, after the FAA cruised for eight months with no administrator at the yoke, President Bill Clinton named Jane Garvey to lead the agency responsible for regulating and overseeing aviation safety and security, and operating the world's largest air traffic control system. As the 14th federal aviation administrator and the first woman to lead the agency, Garvey had a lot to learn and little time to learn it. After five years, she will be leaving the post at a time when the aviation system is in a state of transition, with challenges prompted by the public and Congress. AVweb's Liz Swaine sat down with Garvey for a one-on-one talk at EAA AirVenture, in which the administrator took a look at her five years on the job and life after 9/11.

NewsWire  NEWSWIRE: AVweb's in-depth illustrated aviation news coverage.
  • With scissors in hand and birthday cake waiting, EAA father-and-son team Paul and Tom Poberezny officially cut the ribbon to open the 50th edition of the 1953 EAA fly-in Tuesday morning.
  • After seven years on the aviation market, Garmin is confident it has found the heir apparent to the venerable 195 handheld GPS ... the aptly named Garmin GPSMAP196 Portable Navigator.
  • All this week, the capsule that Steve Fossett spent 14 days in while setting a round-the-world balloon flight record is sitting at the EAA AirVenture Museum, where it is being touched, leaned onto, and otherwise handled by any and all.
  • Three days after sending out a press release stating that AVEMCO would no longer handle its members' airplane insurance, EAA announced that it has found a new partner, Falcon Insurance Agency.
  • The product literature says "Light-Sport Ready" but the feds have yet to set a date for implementation of the new much-discussed aircraft category.
  • As far as Legend Aircraft owner Lanny Rundell knows, there are about 30 Legend kits across the country and four flying aircraft are here in Oshkosh.

ATIS ATIS: Why GA Should Support Corporatized ATC
GUEST COMMENTARY: As usual, Rick Durden's recent column, How Many Are Going to Die, Mr. President? generated a lot of discussion by AVweb readers. Several people mentioned a privatization plan put forward by the Reason Foundation in February 2001. In the interest of providing more information to our readers, AVweb has agreed to publish this commentary by Robert Poole, one of the authors of that plan.
Columns COLUMNS: Say Again? System Safety Theory and Practice
Air traffic control is in the news again, which means more people asking more questions (and making more uneducated statements). To head some of them off at the pass, AVweb's Don Brown uses this month's Say Again column to explain how the U.S. ATC system uses many layers of safety to prevent midair collisions, and what would cause it to fail.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

*** PREVIOUS RESULTS ***

We received over 60 pictures last week. Congratulations to this week's winner, Steve Bailey, of Hoffman Estates, Ill. His picture title "Otter flying in the Pacific Northwest" captures the scene of a Kenmore Air DHC-3 Turbo Otter returning to it's Lake Washington base after flying the San Juan Islands in typical Pacific Northwest weather. Great picture, Steve! Your AVweb prize is on the way.

To check out the winning picture, or to enter next week's contest, go to AVweb's POTW page.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

*** PREVIOUS RESULTS ***

We received over 700 responses to our question last week on new aircraft technologies. The overwhelming majority (72 percent) said GPS is the most beneficial recent innovation in aircraft technology. Just over half predicted that although jet propulsion offers may advantages, piston aircraft will hold a niche in the market for some time to come. Many commenters noted the expansion of new gadgets available, but some said more could be done, for example: "While aviation needs to use proven, reliable technology, GA has been slow to adopt technologies that have been available for years."

To check out the complete results, including comments, go to AVweb's QOTW page.

*** THIS WEEK'S QUESTION ***

This week we would like to know your thoughts on EAA's AirVenture. Please go to AVweb's QOTW page to respond.

Have an idea for a new QOTW? Send your suggestions to qotw@avweb.com. Note, this address is ONLY for suggested QOTW questions, and NOT for QOTW answers or comments.

NewsWire  NEWSWIRE: AVweb's in-depth illustrated aviation news coverage.
  • Though the EAA AirVenture moniker hasn't been with us for very many years, the event that brings thousands of aviation lovers to the small city of Oshkosh, Wis., and the ever-growing Wittman Field has been around half a century this year.
  • EAA and Avemco announced Friday they've parted company after more than a decade of sponsoring an insurance program that targeted homebuilt and recreational aircraft.
  • A $61 million increase in revenue plus a $19 million boost in profits helped offset parent corporation Textron's troubles as Cessna rose above an otherwise gloomy second-quarter performance by GA manufacturers.
  • The bill (H.R. 3479), which -- for now -- saves Meigs, includes expansion plans for O'Hare, and needed a two-thirds majority to pass, but last week missed by 13 votes in the House.
  • John Magaw resigned suddenly on Friday from his post as head of the Transportation Security Agency and was instantly replaced by retired Adm. James M. Loy, who became the agency's deputy director in May.
  • James Coyne, president of the National Air Transportation Association, said Friday that government honchos told him, this time right to his face, that DCA will be closed to GA for "the foreseeable future."
  • AVweb told you in March and AOPA is now well in the fight over high-priced, patented ADs for the wing spars on Lake Amphibian aircraft.

AVweb's John Deakin devotes this column to discussing and correcting the numerous errors in FLYING's article.

NewsWire  NEWSWIRE: AVweb's in-depth illustrated aviation news coverage.
  • After months of speculation -- not to mention probably some pleading and outright begging -- the Bush Administration has finally come up with a sucker, uh ... .... "candidate" to lead the nation's federal administration of aviation "can-do's," with its ever-growing longer list of "NO-can-do's."
  • It may soon be possible to avoid that trek to the doctor's office to get an okay to fly, if AOPA gets its way.
  • In its ongoing effort to figure out where everybody is, the FAA announced Monday that Louisville International Airport will be the sole testing site for its Safe Flight 21 airport surveillance system.
  • Eclipse Aviation rolled out its E500 jet last weekend, and then kept the momentum rolling with an announcement that it collected $18 million in its fourth round of private equity funding.
  • The Civil Air Patrol found the wreckage of a DeHavilland Beaver floatplane on Sunday, near the Chigmit Mountains in southwestern Alaska.
  • Last weekend, for the fourth time in three years, the underground radar tracking center at Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport was flooded out during heavy rain.
News NEWS: Special Report: Arlington 2002 -- Grassroots Aviation In The Northwest
While growing steadily into one of the largest general aviation events on the West Coast, the Northwest EAA's Fly-In at Arlington, Wash., still maintains its small-town atmosphere and grass-roots connection. AVweb's Russ Niles brings us a report.
Columns COLUMNS: The Pilot's Lounge, Reprise: Yes, Pogo, The Enemy Is Us
Last year, AVweb's Rick Durden lost a good friend in the pattern at Wittman Field during AirVenture 2001. Afterward, Rick wrote a strong column to express his anger at pilots who didn't read the Oshkosh arrival NOTAM. Although such negligence may not have caused Rick's friend to die, make sure you and your pilot friends read this ... and fly safe.
Brainteasers BRAINTEASERS: Quiz #57: Flight Instructor Practical Test
The CFI-A checkride has a justly deserved reputation as one of the toughest in aviation. Whether you're already a CFI, a pilot who aspires to become a CFI, or just curious what a flight instructor practical test is all about, Irv Siegel's latest interactive quiz will give you a preview.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

*** PREVIOUS RESULTS ***

We received over 50 pictures last week. Congratulations to this week's winner, R. Douglas Lawhead, of Ashmore, Ill. His picture, "Beech 18 landing at Bussart's," captures the power and speed of a Beech 18 as it comes in for a grass-field landing. You can almost hear the rumble of those radials! Great picture, Douglas! Your AVweb prize is on the way.

To check out the winning picture, or to enter next week's contest, go to AVweb's POTW page.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

*** PREVIOUS RESULTS ***

We received over 600 responses to our question last week on the recent shooting at LAX. Almost one quarter (23 percent) said they immediately suspected a terrorist attack, while almost half (44 percent) waited for further clarification. Only 24 percent felt this incident will eventually affect general aviation, while 39 percent felt the media would treat this as an isolated incident and it would not affect GA at all. One comment pointed out that airports are often unfairly singled out by the media: "I believe that people pay more attention to it because it happened at an airport, it would have been just as tragic anywhere else but I don't believe we would have any talk of tighter security if it were at a McDonald's or any other public place."

To check out the complete results, including comments, go to AVweb's QOTW page.

*** THIS WEEK'S QUESTION ***

This week we would like to know your thoughts on new aircraft technologies. Please go to AVweb's QOTW page to respond.

Have an idea for a new QOTW? Send your suggestions to qotw@avweb.com. Note, this address is ONLY for suggested QOTW questions, and NOT for QOTW answers or comments.

  • Various alphabet groups are asking the FAA to review their TFR charting and notification services, claiming that the lack of clear information and amorphous standards are contributing to incursion incidents.
  • Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta has told Congress, and FAA Administrator Jane Garvey has told controllers, that thousands of air traffic controllers face temporary furloughs of five to eight days by the end of the fiscal year (Sept. 30) unless lawmakers approve $100 million in emergency aviation funding to offset a budgetary shortfall.
  • A new Airworthiness Directive (AD) was issued last week for all Glaser-Dirks Flugzeugbau GmbH (DG Flugzeugbau) Models DG-400 and DG-800A sailplanes.

  • On July 2, Adam Savage was contracted by an Australian TV company to re-create the flight of Lawn Chair Larry for an upcoming special on urban legends.

Maintenance MAINTENANCE: Vacuum Pumps - Wet vs. Dry
With the ever-increasing use of single-engine aircraft for actual IFR flight, it's more important than ever to understand and properly maintain the pneumatic system that operates the gyroscopic instruments. QUESTION OF THE WEEK

*** PREVIOUS RESULTS ***

We received over 400 responses to our question last week on aviation record setting. The majority of our respondents (56 percent) indicated that they are somewhat interested in these feats, but not to the point of overwhelming excitement. Aside from that, 28 percent found them to be boring and not very exciting at all. About half (52 percent) of those responding felt that the type of record attempted dictated the public's response, while 30 percent felt that the non-flying public doesn't even care about this sort of thing. Whether these feats are exciting or not, they do serve a purpose to some people. As one person wrote us, "When a record is broken it honors two people. The person that breaks the record is honored, and the person that had the old record is remembered once again."

To check out the complete results, including comments, go to AVweb's QOTW page.

July 4, 2002

NewsWire  NEWSWIRE: AVweb's in-depth illustrated aviation news coverage.
  • As parades and fireworks mark today's holiday in celebration of America's independence, general aviation pilots face continuing threats to their freedom to fly.
  • A mid-air collision at 36,000 feet between a Bashkirian Airlines Tupolev TU-154 and a Boeing 757 DHL cargo jet on Monday killed all 71 aboard both aircraft, including dozens of Russian schoolchildren on a vacation trip.
  • Same story. Different day. Airport security screeners missed about 25 percent of potential weapons and 30 percent of simulated bombs in the first test since the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) began to oversee airport security in February, according to a report in Monday's USA Today.
  • It's unclear whether the marketing gurus at Bud Light are good or just plain lucky.
  • Atlantic Aero, based at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, N.C., is testing a new jet engine for Honda Motor Company, according to The Business Journal.
  • Two of eight Beech Bonanzas on an outing last Sunday crashed into a canyon wall near Ojai, Calif., killing six, three aboard each of the aircraft.
Columns COLUMNS: Eye of Experience: Being Misled
Everyone agrees we should promote aviation, both to recruit new pilots and to project a positive light to non-pilots. But sometimes our good intentions backfire, and we forget to tell others about the more difficult or complicated aspects of aviation. In this month's Eye of Experience, AVweb's Howard Fried shows some of the ways we can mislead others.
Skywriting SKYWRITINGS: Lest We Forget
On this, the anniversary of the founding of the United States, we take a moment to listen to a story passed on by an aviator who spent several years in a German prison camp, after being shot down while on a mission to protect the free world. It is a tale of both humor and tragedy, and reminds us of the bonds that brings all aviators together.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

*** PREVIOUS RESULTS ***

We received over 60 pictures last week. Congratulations to this week's winner, Catherine Cox, of Wappingers Falls, NY. Catherine's photo is fitting for the July 4th holiday. It captures the majestic beauty of one of our nation's most coveted treasures: The Statue of Liberty. Catherine took this photo while flying in her friend's Cessna 150 down the Hudson River VFR corridor. It was taken one year ago, shortly before the events of 9/11. Great picture, Catherine! Your AVweb prize is on the way.

To check out the winning picture, or to enter next week's contest, go to AVweb's POTW page.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

*** PREVIOUS RESULTS ***

We received over 900 responses to our question last week on VFR charts. The majority (51 percent) of respondents said they carry a variety of charts when flying VFR, while only 1 percent admitted to not carrying any at all. On the topic of expired charts, 42 percent said they have intentionally used recently expired charts, while 23 percent did not knowingly do so. The issue of expired charts use was prevalent in our comment section, as one person said, "Using expired charts could be a serious safety hazard to your passengers and others in the aircraft and on the ground, not to mention yourself. If you can afford to fly you can afford to subscribe to chart renewal services."

To check out the complete results, including comments, go to AVweb's QOTW page.

*** THIS WEEK'S QUESTION ***

This week we would like to know your thoughts on aviation record setting. Thanks to Scott Rodriguez for suggesting this week's topic. Please go to AVweb's QOTW page to respond.

Have an idea for a new QOTW? Send your suggestions to qotw@avweb.com. Note, this address is ONLY for suggested QOTW questions, and NOT for QOTW answers or comments.

July 1, 2002

NewsWire  NEWSWIRE: AVweb's in-depth illustrated aviation news coverage.
  • With only a few days to go before the holiday weekend, the FAA is still thinking about whether to expand the D.C. TFR areas and further increase combat air patrols.
  • After normal attrition didn't do the job, Cessna is upping the ante to shed 900 employees.
  • Boeing and some unnamed airlines considered buying up planes mothballed in the 9/11 aftermath and scrapping them to foil low-cost competition.
  • Runway incursions are still a big issue and now we can learn from the mistakes of others.
  • It was unlike any touch and go you did with your instructor. To show the viability of "safe and routine rocket-powered vehicle operation" test pilot Dick Rutan dead-sticked the XCOR EZ-Rocket to a landing at Mojave, Calif and then re-ignited the engines to blast off over the desert again.
  • While downtown airports are facing extinction in many cities, St. Paul, Minn., is hoping to breathe new life into St. Paul Downtown Airport by building a $12 million dike.
  • The FAA will order owners of airplanes with Continental C-125 and C-145 engines with certain Slick Magnetos to have the mags inspected sooner rather than later.
AVmail AVMAIL
Reader mail about the C-130 air tanker crash, graphical depiction of TFRs, El Toro (Calif.) airport, ATC manpower shortage, whether a pilot is required to show his pilot certificate to an airport security guard, fire hazard from helicopter exhausts, remembering AVweb's R. Scott Puddy, and more.
Columns COLUMNS: As The Beacon Turns: End of an Era?
Imagine what would happen if all the bad things that could go wrong with general aviation did go wrong: It became too expensive, too risky, too regulated, and too elitist. In this month's As The Beacon Turns, AVweb's Michael Maya Charles imagines such a world. Or was it a nightmare?
Training TRAINING: Firing Your CFI
Lots of pilots have a story about a favorite flight instructor, and some have a story of a CFI they'd not want to fly with again. But could a flight instructor do something that would make you want to land immediately? Greg Bullough relates an experience he had where an instructor did many such things, any one of which should have caused Greg to terminate the flight.
