New On AVweb

August 29, 2002

NewsWire  NEWSWIRE: AVweb's in-depth illustrated aviation news coverage.
  • A year after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, small aircraft are facing airspace shutdowns in the form of at least three Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) zones.
  • Eclipse Aviation made it from the drawing board to the desert skies Monday morning, when the company's chief test pilot, Bill Bubb, took the Eclipse 500 jet for its first spin aloft.
  • Access to FAA towers, which were off-limits after 9/11, is available again ... and has been since March, though few have heard the news.
  • Australian air traffic controllers are threatening to strike for five hours tomorrow if they can't reach an agreement with their employer, Airservices Australia.
  • Small airports in California are out of luck when it comes to getting help from the state.
  • A group of civilian space enthusiasts plans to launch the world's first amateur space rocket next month.

Reader mail about 9/11/02 TFRs, P-49 over Crawford Texas, Mayor Daley's request for a TFR over the Chicago business district, armed flight crews, FAA registration info on CDROM, the FAA's ban on owner-maintained Canadian aircraft, and more.
Columns COLUMNS: Eye Of Experience: General Aviation in Crisis
AVweb's Howard Fried is very concerned about the future of general aviation. In this month's Eye Of Experience, he looks at the effects of post-terrorism security measures and what the consequences (intended and otherwise) will be on this great passion of ours.
The System THE SYSTEM: Desktop Proficiency
Although you can't use it to log training or currency, a PC procedures trainer might be the way to visit an unfamiliar airport or iron out an arrival procedure before you even open the hangar door. In a recent IFR Refresher, Brian Johnson explained how to use software that used to be "just a game" to save time and money, and increase safety during real flights.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

*** PREVIOUS RESULTS ***

We received over 70 pictures last week. Congratulations to this week's winner, Hernan Orellana, of Moore, Okla. Hernan's picture shows what an ice storm can do to a fleet of T-37s. You've probably never seen a T-Tweetie iced up so bad. Great picture, Hernan! Your AVweb prize is on the way.

To check out the winning picture, or to enter next week's contest, go to AVweb's POTW page.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

*** PREVIOUS RESULTS ***

We received over 700 responses to our question last week on FSS privatization. The majority (60 percent) of respondents said they prefer walk-in briefings, while 34 percent opted for DUATS. The majority (64 percent) did not favor a centralized FSS system, although 12 percent did. Most of the comments predicted the step from privatized FSS to user fees would be a very small one. Several respondents thought privatization is no solution. As one wrote, "We have the best traffic control system in the world. Unfortunately it's mired in bureaucracy, but privatization would not fix that."

To check out the complete results, including comments, go to AVweb's QOTW page.

*** THIS WEEK'S QUESTION ***

This week we would like to know your thoughts on Airport Noise Issues. Please go to AVweb's QOTW page to respond.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

*** PREVIOUS RESULTS ***

We received over 600 responses to our question last week on PIREPs. When asked if obtaining PIREPs was always part of preflight activities, 64 percent said always or most of the time, while 25 percent asked for them only if adverse weather conditions were forecast. Only 10 percent of our respondents consistently filed PIREPs on each flight, while 13 percent admitted to never filing them. One commenter noted one important aspect of pilot reports: "PIREPs are only as good as the person that might make it."

NewsWire  NEWSWIRE: AVweb's in-depth illustrated aviation news coverage.
  • Hundreds of aircraft have been grounded -- some for the second time -- by a recall of Textron-Lycoming engines and an emergency AD issued by the FAA.
  • Wally Pike, president of the National Association of Air Traffic Specialists (NAATS), told AVweb the FAA will announce on Wednesday whether it will go ahead with a $1 million study into privatizing some of the functions of flight service stations in the lower 48 states.
  • Aug. 15, AOPA President Phil Boyer congratulated Texas Gov. Rick Perry for his state's decision to build a new GA airport in the Austin area.
  • Is there a scramjet in your future travel plans? As AVweb told you in August, Australian scientists tested a scramjet and were encouraged by their immediate observations, and now data is piling up to support their early optimism.
  • The British solution to a recreational pilot rating has many of the features that some U.S. groups are howling for but unlikely to get.
  • Canadian military authorities say a worldwide aviation safety advisory may be issued after a tiny scratch in the tail rotor of one of its helicopters caused a fatal crash.
  • Well, now here's a thought. The new head of the Transportation Security Administration is saying that it might help if those hired to oversee airport security had some background in aviation.

A cylinder in your piston aircraft engine flunks its compression with lots of leakage past the exhaust valve. The mechanic says you probably fried the valve by leaning too aggressively. Wrong, says AVweb's John Deakin! Lean mixtures don't cause burned valves -- lousy valve-to-seat geometry does. It's probably the fault of the factory or overhaul shop, not the pilot.

  • At least there's some positive news on the GA front. This week, the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs announced it will start a new single-engine flight training program, contracting with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
  • The comment period on the FAA's plan to implement Domestic Reduced Vertical Separation Minimums (DRVSM) ended last week ... but not before the GA alphabet groups weighed in with their concerns.
  • The FAA this week stood firm despite pressure from Wyoming's congressional delegation to ban Stage II private jets at Jackson Hole Airport.

We received over 80 pictures last week. Congratulations to this week's winner, Bernie Samms, of Kingston Beach, Australia. His picture, titled "Derwent Valley -- Ready For Takeoff," captures the beauty of backcountry flying down under. Bernie tells us that the airstrip, in Tasmania, is at 2,500 feet elevation and is cut out of a pine forest. Great picture, Bernie! Your AVweb prize is on the way.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

*** PREVIOUS RESULTS ***

We received more than 400 responses to our question last week on Jane Garvey's tenure at the FAA. The results were mixed when we asked for reaction to the end of her term ... 36 percent said she had done well, but 27 percent felt her departure didn't come soon enough. In ranking her specific accomplishments, 46 percent chose the Sport Pilot proposal or new technology, and 35 percent chose "None of the above." While the comments we received stretched the critical spectrum on Jane Garvey's work, many recognized that being FAA Administrator is a tough job. As one person said, "Bureaucracy still rules in D.C."

To check out the complete results, including comments, go to AVweb's QOTW page.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

*** PREVIOUS RESULTS ***

We received over 800 responses to our question last week on air shows. The majority (59 percent) of our respondents said they attend air shows when convenient, while only 5 percent showed no interest attending in these events. The majority (76 percent) also claimed that education and entertainment were both important aspects of air shows. As most readers' comments stated, air shows are fairly safe here in the U.S., especially when compared with other countries. As one person noted, "The only two unsafe parts of an air show are the drive there and the sunburn you get."

*** PREVIOUS RESULTS ***

We received almost 500 responses to our question last week on EAA's AirVenture. Only 13 percent of our respondents said they attend AirVenture every year, while 36 percent said they had never been. Respondents split over whether AirVenture is worth a weeklong stay -- 49 percent yes, 51 percent no. As their favorite part of the event, 46 percent chose the static displays, and many mentioned the forums and workshops. Many commenters decried rising costs and commercialism, but most agreed AirVenture is a unique and worthwhile experience. As one person noted, "ALL aviators need to attend at least once."
