Stan Bernstein is the president of the Regional Air Cargo Carriers Association. He spoke with AVweb about the pilot shortage from the perspective of regional air cargo carriers, a collection of Part 121 and Part 135 operators who have been most affected by increased demand for professional pilots. Berstein told AVweb, “Jobs flying at night in smaller turboprop aircraft would present themselves as the entry-level position for most young pilots aspiring to a job in the major airlines.” Paying only $35,000 per year initially, these jobs were once highly coveted by young pilots looking to build time, but “the file drawer of all our carriers once filled with resumes are no more. Needless to say, every candidate that presents themselves with the minimum licensing requirements is viewed carefully,” says Berstein.
