Although it seemed like a pretty straightforward thing to do, politics got involved in the Senate's consideration of the FAA Reauthorization Bill, and the legislation is stalled again. Andy Cebula, AOPA's executive vice president for government affairs, talked with AVweb's Russ Niles about how the bill became mired by non-aviation issues and how it might be revived.

AVweb and FlyContract Wonder "Who's Going to Fly All Those Jets?"

Corporate jet deliveries are at an all-time high. In the face of rising insurance requirements, employers are finding it a challenge to fill all the positions coming available with qualified pilots and flight attendants. Terry Cooper, CEO of FlyContract.com, tells AVweb's Mike Blakeney that airline pilots are disenchanted with falling wages and benefits and type-rated flight school graduates are frequently competing for the same corporate jobs.

User Fees Out of the FAA Reauthorization Bill? NATA's Eric Byer Gives Us the Inside Story

Thanks to the tremendous pressure the FAA has come under in recent weeks over maintenance inspections and the air traffic controller situation, the issue of user fees as a method of financing the agency just didn't seem that important anymore to legislators in Washington. In order to get an FAA reauthorization package in place, the user fee issue has been abandoned, and a new reauthorization package will likely be voted on by Tuesday. AVweb's Russ Niles spoke with Eric Byer of the National Air Transportation Association for an explanation of Friday's events.

Sally Crossfield Farley, one of the late Scott Crossfield's six children, has created the Scott Crossfield Foundation to, among other things, carry on the A. Scott Crossfield Aerospace Education Teacher of the Year Award. We caught up with Sally to find out about the foundation, but also what it was like being raised by a gentle, quiet and humble man whose day job just happened to include flying at Mach 3 in planes like the X-15.

Teens-in-Flight Puts Children of Fallen Soldiers into the Skies

When we think of victims of war, we most likely think of the men and women in uniform who either never return or come back injured and disabled. But their families are also victims, and retired Marine Corps Col. Jack Howell is using aviation to help the children of those soldiers find solace and direction. The Teens-in-Flight program has already helped dozens of young people and is on the cusp of becoming a national program for kids who have already paid a heavy price in America's conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq and for those whom life is more challenging than others.

Extra! Thunderbird Pilot Maj. Nicole Malachowski Talks to IFR Refresher About the Qualities That Make a Good IFR Pilot

For this month's IFR Refresher podcast, editor Meredith Saini spoke with Major Nicole Malachowski of the U.S. Air Force about the qualities a good IFR safety pilot should possess. Meredith caught up with her at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., where Major Malachowski recently gave a presentation on her career and what it was like to fly with the U.S. Thunderbirds demonstration team. Major Malachowski's fascination with airplanes began when she was a little girl. She graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1996 and for the next 10 years served as an F-15E Strike Eagle instructor pilot and flight commander, including a tour in Iraq. In 2006, she became the first female Thunderbird pilot, flying the F-16 Fighting Falcon. This spring, she and her husband are relocating from Las Vegas to Washington, where she will serve as an Air Force legislative fellow on a one-year special duty assignment. She says she hopes to return to flying one day.
