EAA CHAPTER #1116 MEETS AT JACQUELINE COCHRAN AIRPORT (TRM) Chapter News - EAA Chapter #1116 Supports CVYAEP Summer CampJune 28 - July 5, 2014
Our Chapter is looking forward to supporting the upcoming Coachella Valley Youth Aviation Education Program (CVYAEP) Summer Camp being held this year from June 28 to July 5, 2014. Founded by Instructor Pilots Rafael Sierra and William 'Billy' Granch, the CVYAEP Summer Camp is available to local high school students in the greater Coachella Valley. The program provides free aviation education in a series of classroom presentations culminating with free flights for all participants at an EAA Young Eagles Rally on Saturday, July 5, 2014.
After Summer Camp, the CVYAEP program continues throughout the year with free monthly seminars and mentoring of students to assist them in completing the Experimental Aircraft Association's 5-Step 'Flight Plan' to becoming a pilot (http://www.eaa.org/en/eaa/aviation-education-and-resources/eaa-youth-education/eaa- young-eagles-program).
Participants complete the first step of EAA's 'Flight Plan' at the end of the Summer Camp with the Young Eagles flight on Saturday, July 5, 2014. After their flight they are awarded an EAA logbook with a unique code allowing free EAA Student membership and enrollment in Sporty's free online Learn to Fly Course.
Students completing the Learn to Fly Course receive a certificate for a free one-hour introductory flight at the controls of an airplane and eligibility for flight training scholarships to obtain their FAA Private Pilot License. To date, the Palm Springs Pilots Association has provided more than 120 hours of free in-flight training to program graduates .
The CVYAEP is in its third year with total participation growing to over 350 students. All high schools in the Coachella Valley are represented and this year will see participation and support from all three area flight schools; Palm Springs Pilots Association, JacksonAir Flight Training and Desert West Aviation.
