AOPA Summit Field Notes

AVweb Insider - October 2013
Although AOPA’s Summit show in Fort Worth this week may mark the end of an era, it didn’t necessarily feel like that in the exhibit hall on Friday. Foot traffic was up and down throughout the show and vendors we're mulling their next moves for show attendance.

Redbird To End $1 Avgas Two Weeks Early

AVweb Flash - October 2013
Redbird Skyport's offer to fill your airplane's tank for $1 a gallon during October has drawn so much activity that the organizers have decided to end the promotion two weeks early, spokesman Jeff Van West said on Tuesday. "In preparing for this experiment, we planned for traffic averaging eight times normal," said Van West. "Actual response has been four times higher than that -- over 30 times our normal volume. By the end of the first week, we'd reached our data collection goal for the entire month." The incessant demand has become "unmanageable" for the Skyport staff, he said.

Redbird's $1 Avgas Attracts Hundreds

AVweb Flash - October 2013
Redbird Skyport's unique offer to sell avgas at $1 a gallon for the month of October already has drawn almost 500 takers, company spokesman Josh Harnagel told AVweb on Tuesday. "We've been a little busier than even we expected," Harnagel said. Every pilot who flies in to the field at San Marcos, Texas, is asked to complete a brief survey, conducted by a Redbird employee and recorded on an iPad. "We ask a lot of questions about pilot perceptions, such as, how much does the pilot think is the markup on gas for the FBO," says Harnagel. "It they think there's a 100 percent markup, for example, that affects where the pilot might choose to go to buy fuel." Most of the participants so far are aircraft owners, and most have a lot of flying experience, with about 90 percent of the pilots instrument-rated and a lot of ATPs, he said. About 30 percent so far have flown in more than once.

Redbird's Fuel Fest: Y'all Behave Now

AVweb Insider - September 2013
It shouldn't need saying, but maybe it does. Buck-a-gallon gas is bringing out the scam artists. But in a moment of sheer delusional idealism, our resident blogger hopes to see some better angels.

AVmail: September 23, 2013

AVweb Features - September 2013
John Laming writes: "The old saying of 'I can type at 80 words a minute but I can't fly' applies, in my opinion, to a high percentage of airline pilots around the world. Belatedly, in April of this year, the FAA issued a safety alert for operators, the purpose of which was to encourage operators to promote manual flight operations when appropriate. At least the FAA appears to be the first regulator to take action to tackle the world-wide pilot tendency for automation addiction. This addiction has seen many loss-of-control events that involved pilots being so wedded to the automatic pilot that [pilots] have lost basic instrument flying skills, if they had any in the first place."... Does the Cost of Avgas Really Matter?

AVweb Insider - September 2013
Surely it must, but perhaps not as much as many of us think. Aircraft owners and operators confront a wall of high costs and $6 avgas is just another one. Redbird's fuel experiment next month may shed some light on what pilots really think.

Redbird's Skyport Will Sell Dollar-a-Gallon Avgas During October

AVweb Flash - August 2013
Redbird’s Skyport in San Marcos, Texas, will be selling avgas for a dollar a gallon throughout the month of October. What’s the catch? There really isn’t one, other than the company will ask fuel buyers to participate in a brief survey probing their views on flying habits and how—or even if—the cost of flying affects those views and, especially, flying behavior. Redbird aims to find out if the high cost of flying really is the reason people do less of it.

OpenAirplane: Maximizing Your Pilot's License

AVweb Features - August 2013
For those who don’t own an airplane, the pilot certificate often turns off when the pilot is away from their home base because the process of renting an aircraft while away from home can be a hassle. OpenAirplane hopes to change this.

Aircraft Detailing: More than a Wash

AVweb Features - August 2013
Hiring a professional detailing service can create a starting point for rejuvenating the aircraft paint finish, while making routine post-flight cleaning easier. Detailing work is pricey, but might be paid during resale.

Ben Harrison, the assistant airport manager, was out in front to greet us when we arrived. That doesn't happen very often elsewhere. In addition, I had an experience where they really shined in terms of customer service: I inadvertently left my iPad in a rental car there and called the next morning when I realized it was missing. The person I spoke with at the front desk immediately went and tracked it down, and then Ben took it over to the UPS Store for me, got me in touch with the person at the store while he waited so I could arrange shipping back to me, and then stayed to ensure that everything was all set with the package before leaving. Jonathon had previously made hotel and rental auto reservations for our arrival but was able to cancel the hotel — without a charge. The rental auto was a 24-hour rental so it was planeside when we arrived. Fuel pricing was due to the CAA Program, but their regular prices are very reasonable, also. Anything we needed at the time they were able to answer or provide in a competent and friendly manner. Excellent customer service all around!Keep those nominations coming. Martin provides the case study as he tells us about a recent visit to Signature Flight Support at Rochester International Airport (KRST) in Rochester, Minnesota:Very friendly faces and a desire to help. Prompt service and courtesy. In the little gift shop, they displayed a t-shirt that caught my eye. I asked if they had one in smaller children's sizes (grandchildren sizes). They did not. However, the gentleman behind the counter aksed if he could have my contact information and he would check with the supplier for avilability and let me know. I know it's not much, but sometimes it's the little things that cause someone to notice. I've been to this FBO numerous times over the last few years, and I receive top-notch treatment every time.Keep those nominations coming. I have always had excellent service with Scott and Debra at the Page Airport. This year, they excelled themselves. Their line personnel are very accommodating and most helpful. We were delayed due to weather on May 1, but they still accommodated us and our four-hour late arrival. Fuel prices are very competitive, too. The line guys had my car waiting and were helpful in loading our luggage. This FBO will get my business again.Keep those nominations coming. We have stopped there several times for fuel and customs. The customs folks are friendly, courteous, and quick! We park right outside the customs office and are typically processed in less than ten minutes. We had a pressurization issue after departure, and when we returned, Copeca was very helpful with lining up a mechanic, arranging accommodations, and providing transportation. I highly recommend Copeca for a tech stop or overnight.Keep those nominations coming. Aviation Group Provides Aid To Tornado Victims

AVweb Flash - May 2013
Sky Hope Network, a nonprofit organization, is raising money through June 1 to support members of the aviation community affected by the destructive tornado that hit near Oklahoma City on Monday. "FAA personnel, staffers, escrow agents, and airport and FBO support workers in the OKC region are victim to a range of personal losses," says the Network at their website. "They need immediate assistance from the wider aviation business community." All funds collected will go directly to the victims, the group said. Aerobridge, a nonprofit that coordinates general-aviation relief efforts, told AOPA no pilot volunteers are needed since the affected areas are accessible by road.
