Two years ago, a South African startup called Adept Airmotive announced a V-6 engine project, and they're back at AirVenture 2013 with a running example and some test data. The company's Richard Schultz says testing has thus far revealed that at 320 pounds and 320 horsepower, the Adept engine has an excellent power-to-weight ratio, and it addresses one sticky issue in aviation: It doesn't require 100-octane fuel but can operate on lower grades, including mogas and biofuels. Certification, says Schultz, is about two years out. More

Robert Baslee's Airdrome Aeroplanes was contracted to produce a replica Spirit of St. Louis aircraft for a bank. He says the aircraft has attracted enough attention that he now plans to produce the aircraft as a kit. It won't be his first. His company has been producing WWI replica aircraft (Fokkers, Sopwith designs, Nieuports -- even a pre-War Bleriot) since 1989. More

Angle-of-attack indicators have become a hot safety-of-flight market item, and at AirVenture 2013, we're seeing more competition in the field. Bendix/King announced its entry into the AoA market with the new KLR10, which uses differential pressure to infer angle of attack and then presents this on a color-coded display in the cockpit, equipped with audio warnings. Initially, the KLR10 will be for experimental aircraft only, but it will soon be certified for all aircraft. More
