Brazil-based aircraft manufacturer Embraer held a ceremony to celebrate its 50th anniversary at the company’s headquarters, in São José dos Campos, Brazil, on Monday. Embraer was founded on Aug. 19, 1969, by the Brazilian government as the state-owned Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica S.A. The company was privatized in 1994 and employs approximately 18,000 people worldwide. It operates in the commercial, executive, defense and agricultural aviation segments.

“Embraer resulted from the determination of visionaries who wanted to transform the impossible into reality—and they did it,” said Embraer CEO Francisco Gomes Neto. “That’s what we want to show with these actions at this historic moment for the company. We grew up with this spirit, we’ve reached 50 and that is how we will continue over the next decades.”

In addition to Monday’s live-streamed celebration, the company plans to commemorate its five decades of history at aviation events and airshows around the world with demonstration flights, an exhibition of classic and new aircraft and the launch of a commemorative edition book. Since its foundation, Embraer has delivered more than 8,000 aircraft that currently transport over 145 million passengers a year.
