An airplane-loving design student’s senior project gave rise to a family business dedicated to building scaled replica fighters “the right way.” ScaleBirds is a Groton, Connecticut-based company with plans to offer affordable kits for radial- and inline-engined mini-fighters—engineered as sport planes with a high “fun” quotient.

    • Pricing is still tentative, but projected to be high-20s – low 30s. They are launching a reduced-price Beta program for experienced builders to refine the production process for the kits.

    • The P-36 came with cowl-mounted guns. I’d assume the inline P-40 would have wing-mounted gun fairings (made of fiberglass).
