The Weekender: Balloons, Seaplanes And More

0

Whether it’s a clam lunch out East or ball drop contest out West, The Weekender found some worthwhile trips on SocialFlight. The annual Walla Walla Balloon Stampede starts today and runs through Sunday with thirty-plus balloons participating. Saturday begins with a navigational challenge for the balloon pilots competing for the Mayor’s Cup. Join them on Sunday for the first attempt at a Great Launch, with all balloons launching in just 30 seconds. Balloons and more will fly over the Mt. Vernon Outland Airport in Illinois starting Friday afternoon, when the grounds open to offer rides in tethered balloons, a P-51 Mustang and a Waco biplane, followed by an evening balloon glow. Aircraft and balloon rides will continue through the weekend, along with drop contests, displays and plenty of activities for the kids.

On Saturday morning in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, learn all about the fun of flying seaplanes. Modern Avionics and Air Trek North are hosting a talk with veteran seaplane pilot Ernie Wolfenson, who will show you what it’s like to fly to the Minnesota-Canadian border, from weather to flight planning to loading, the en route flight, landing and docking. The presentation will have lots of pictures, including a short video. Take in the Atlantic shoreline this Sunday on the way to the Virginia Coastal Fly-In at Accomack County Airport, hosted by the Eastern Shore of Virginia Pilot’s Association. Ultralights to jets are welcome. At the airport, an east-shore-style cookout awaits with hamburgers, hot dogs and Cherrystone Little Neck Clams fresh from the steamer.
