The Weekender: Picnics, Patton and Pancakes

The Weekender found plenty of ways on SocialFlight to take in the early summer weather. On Saturday, enjoy lunch, music and a tour of the Veterans’ Museum at Arnold Field in Tennessee, all for just $10. Fly in and pull right up to the Command Headquarters building, where Rosie the Riveter will serve you lunch. The menu includes chicken fajitas, hot dogs and homemade blackberry cobbler with ice cream. For another aviation history outing, you can camp under the wing at the DeRidder Army Air Base in Louisiana all weekend during the Grasshopper Fly-In. Arrive Thursday and see “General Patton” take a convoy from the base to Fort Polk. The weekend will include a Friday hangar dinner dance, pancake breakfast, WWII re-enactments and demonstrations on the ground and in the air.

Enjoy free airplane rides, displays, music and local aviation Saturday when the Doylestown Pilot Association, Bucks County Airport Authority, and Leading Edge Aviation host their annual open house and picnic at the Doylestown airport in Pennsylvania. Rain date will be Sunday. Nutmeg Soaring invites all to its fourth annual Open House Sunday at Freehold Airport in the Catskills of New York. Free glider rides will be awarded to the first biplane, oldest antique, warbird and other firsts to arrive by noon. All early bird pilots will get free donuts and coffee.
