Just in time for ski season, Ann Arbor, Michigan-based fuel supplier Avfuel has teamed with FBO chain Atlantic Aviation to supply all four of Atlantic’s Colorado locations with Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The two have been cooperating to provide Neste SAF at Atlantic’s Aspen base since early 2021, but the new agreement adds Atlantic bases in Montrose (KMTJ), Hadden/Steamboat (KHDN) and Aspen/Rifle (KRIL).
According to Avfuel, Neste’s MY SAF currently has one of the highest average blend ratios available in business aviation to at 30/70 SAF to petroleum-based jet fuel. Each truckload of the SAF reduces carbon emissions by 19 metric tons across its life cycle, according to the company, equivalent to the mitigating effects on the same amount of carbon that is neutralized by 22.5 acres of U.S. forests per year.
Brian Corbett, chief commercial and sustainability officer for Atlantic Aviation, said, “Sustainability is so much more than a buzzword to us. Striving to reduce our impact on the environment is a promise we’ve made to our customers, our staff and the communities we serve … We know environmental sustainability is vitally important in our mountains.”
Keith Sawyer, Avfuel’s manager of alternative fuels, added, “We’re incredibly appreciative of [the Atlantic] team, which has worked tirelessly to further sustainability initiatives. Together, we can support a cleaner aviation for a brighter future.”
So….. what is the cost?

You’ve got a MoGas STC? Nice! I think we can both agree that’s a good thing.
Point being is that “sustainable” is the wrong word to use if you price a commodity so high that it then becomes a luxury item. The unintended consequences are people switching to MoGas and thus not participating in a so-called green fuel. People in Germany are now burning wood because of green energy initiates. Just a thought.
I don’t have a problem with pushing sustainable fuels for aviation, but this sounds a little like virtue signaling to the rich jet set that likes to fly into the Colorado ski resorts for Christmas break. Colorado is a great place, but I don’t really think it is any more important to keep their skies clean than anywhere else in the country.
Nope, Colorado’s skies aren’t more important than anywhere else’s – but demand is demand. If there are buyers in Aspen, it’s a great place to sell it.
As to Cost – According to what’s posted on AirNav.com, Atlantic’s Aspen location sells Jet-A for $10.13/gallon, and SAF for $11.73/gallon.
As for virtue-signaling – since some people love to point to the hypocrisy of private jets flying to eco-conferences (some of which are held in Aspen), this allows those attendees to at least practice what they preach.
And as for clean-skies – unlike smog or acid rain, carbon dioxide is found globally. So it doesn’t matter where one fills up. The results go everywhere.
Just have trucks painted as “SAF” and deliver standard Jet-A for the regular Jet-A price.
The arilines will be happy and the self loading freight will think they are saving the planet on every flight.
Everybody wins and the planet will be just fine.
