Embraer Delivers First KC-390

Embraer delivered its first KC-390 multi-mission military jet to the Força Aérea Brasileira (FAB/Brazilian Air Force) at Brazil’s Anápolis Air Base on Wednesday. Embraer says it has already been conducting training with Air Force teams in preparation for the aircraft’s entry into service with FAB’s First Troop Transport Group. FAB placed an order for 28 KC-390s in 2014.

“The incorporation of the KC-390 into the Brazilian Air Force is a milestone in military aviation,” said the FAB Commander Lieutenant-Brigadier Antonio Carlos Moretti Bermudez. “Its modernity will bring an implementation and improvement in the doctrine of use of this multi-mission vector, greatly contributing to the fulfillment of the mission to control, defend and integrate the 22 million square kilometers under our responsibility.”

The KC-390 is designed for missions including humanitarian support, medical evacuation, search and rescue, fire fighting, cargo and troop transport and launch, and aerial refueling. The aircraft, which will be produced at Embraer’s Gavião Peixoto facility in São Paulo, Brazil, is powered by two International Aero Engines V2500 turbofan engines, has a maximum speed of 470 knots and is capable of carrying up to 26 metric tons of cargo. It was developed as a joint project between Embraer and FAB.

  1. So was this Brazilian aircraft issue a type certificate by the FAA ? That is, can it fly in US airspace (not necessarily assuming it has to have TC to do so, I just don’t know the answer).
