tailBeacon Gets STC

uAvionix has begun shipping tailBeacon ADS-B Out units after receiving STC approval for the device. The company announced the approval on Friday and said it has been building and stockpiling tailBeacons since receiving TSO approval on the four essential elements of the device just before AirVenture. The $2,000 units are available directly from uAvionix and its network of qualified installers and resellers.

The STC was issued for Cessna 172s but the FAA has allowed a workaround by issuing a policy memo that permits A&Ps with inspection authority to install it on any airframe as long as no structural modifications are needed. It’s anticipated the installation time, including paperwork, will take less than an hour for most aircraft. The tailBeacon includes an integrated transmitter, GPS and barometric altitude sensor along with the position light and satisfies the basic ADS-B out mandate that goes into effect Jan. 1.
