Boeing Promises To Stay In Seattle

After all of the layoffs, cross-country moves and sheer instability of Boeing, local Seattle residents are a bit wary of the company’s next step. To help reassure Snohomish County residents about the future of the Boeing Co. and its thousands of jobs, Alan Mulally, president and CEO ofBoeing’s Commercial Airplane Division, said the company expects to be in the Northwest for the long haul. “OK means Boeing is going to be OK, and our community is going to be OK,” Mulally told a large crowd of business and civic leaders at a breakfast meeting. “I see us being here forever,” he added. Even with this pep talk, no one can calm the nerves of residents who have seen Boeing take a beating over the last couple of years. The manufacturing giant has laid off tens of thousands of workers, and lost some major sales campaigns to European arch-rival Airbus, which *may* this year deliver more aircraft than Boeing for the first time ever after previously besting Boeing’s order numbers. Mulally couldn’t guarantee that no other layoffs would be issued. “We’re doing the right thing, but it’s really, really tough,” he said. Sounds comforting, doesn’t it?
