EAA Honors 100 Years Of Homebuilts

0

As we enter the year of the 100th anniversary of the Wright’s famous homebuilt, EAA is pouring on the patriotism to mark Wilbur and Orville’s world-changing achievement. The next phase of EAA’s Countdown to Kitty Hawk program is 50 Flags to Kitty Hawk, descriptive of EAA member pilots from each state who will fly their home state’s flag to the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kitty Hawk, N.C., sometime before Dec. 17, 2003. Each state’s governor will declare a special day when the flag arrives and that state’s flag will fly at the memorial. The first pilot chosen will likely have the shortest flight. Charles Stites, of Chapel Hill, will make the hop in his 1949 Ryan Navion to deliver the North Carolina flag on Tuesday, Dec. 17, which begins the 100th year. None of the other states have yet been claimed, and pilots can apply on EAA’s Web site after Jan. 1. Anyone who finishes a homebuilt during the year can receive a special centennial data plate and certificate from EAA … so maybe if you’re almost finished with yours you’ll consider waiting until Tuesday. Builders can also have their pictures shown on a special section of EAA’s Web site — interested EAA’ers may send copies of their aircraft registration, a photo of builder and plane and a brief description of the project to EAA Aviation Information Services, Box 3086, Oshkosh, WI 54903-3086.
