A California airshow performer died Sunday while attempting an inverted cut-the-ribbon maneuver at a show at Travis Air Force Base. Eddie Andreini, 77, was killed when his modified “Super” Stearman hit the ground inverted and caught fire in front of the crowd. “No one wants to see an event like this,” said base spokesman Col. David Mott. Our hearts and condolences go out to the Andreini family.

The balance of the show was cancelled. Weather was good with a 10-15 knot wind. Mott told a news conference that Andreini was a lifelong pilot who had been performing in airshows for 25 years. He was based in Half Moon Bay, Calif. The aircraft’s modifications included a unique closed canopy.
