Airbus is on the verge of closing the line on the outsized A380 following reports that Qantas was officially canceling its A380 orders and Emirates is likely to cancel its order for 36 A380s. New reports via airlinerwatch.com indicate that Airbus in on the verge of announcing closure of the line when it reports its annual results tomorrow.

Airlines have been reconsidering the need for a 540-plus-seat, four-engined airliner in light of the newer, more fuel-efficient twinjets like Airbus’ own A350 and the Boeing 787. Shuttering the A380 line now would be an ignominious end to an airliner launched with so much fanfare in 2001 and placed into service by 2007.
