Boeing has confirmed it has called a mandatory meeting for employees of its Wichita operations for Wednesday amid concerns the company will close its plants there. The Wichita Eagle is reporting the 2,000 employees were told Tuesday they must attend the Wednesday meeting, which begins at 10:30 a.m. local time. Those working out of town have been given a call-in number. Boeing officials have been hinting the Wichita plant is in trouble in light of defense cuts and a lack of future prospects for work there.
Just before Christmas, Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Kan., issued a statement saying Boeing would build Air Force tankers in Washington State rather than Wichita, furthering speculation about the plant. Pompeo said the decision reneged on Boeing’s promise to create more jobs in Wichita if it won the hotly contested tanker contract.
