Continental 737 Off Runway In Denver

Photos being displayed by 9News, the Denver NBC affiliate show a Continental Boeing 737-500 resting on its belly with its left engine sheared off in a ravine next to a runway at Denver International Airport Sunday morning. Thirty-eight of the 112 passengers and crew on the flight were injured in the accident, which happened about 6:18 p.m. local time Saturday. None of the injuries were said to be life-threatening and many occurred during the evacuation. Witnesses on board the aircraft told media that the nose was just lifting during the takeoff run when it went back down and the plane slid off the runway. They also said the right side of the aircraft was on fire as they got out. The accident happened close to the airport fire department and crews were on the scene immediately and were able to put out the fire quickly. Weather reports indicate winds gusting to about 30 knots at 290. Runway in use was 34R, which is 12,000 feet long.
