GAMA Reports Signs Of Growth

Business jets and turboprops both showed growth in shipments during the first half of 2012, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association reported last week, but piston airplane deliveries failed to rally, showing a 1.6 percent decline compared to the first six months of 2011. Overall, GAMA President Pete Bunce said, the data show “positive signs … When coupled with the positive trend we are seeing in the used market, we may finally be witnessing the start of our recovery.” Business jet deliveries increased 13.1 percent compared to the same period last year, with 294 aircraft delivered in the first half of 2012.

Turboprop deliveries alsoimproved to 243 units from the 2011 shipment level of 220 units. The piston engine airplane segment completed 381 deliveries. Bunce said the industry needs the FAA to do more to help. “Significant impediments remain in our member companies’ ability to bring new, innovative and safety-enhancing products to our customers,” he said. “While we have seen positive steps by FAA’s leadership to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the certification process, much work remains to be done to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by improving and emerging markets.” The full report is posted online (PDF).
