AOPA Summit is coming up Oct. 11-13 in Palm Springs, Calif., and lots of opportunities will be offered for pilots to brush up on their skills. The IMC Club will host an instrument proficiency forum on Thursday the 11th, from 10:30 a.m. till noon. Pilots are invited to participate in the decision-making process through an organized discussion of real-life instrument-flying experiences. “We intend to be present with this ‘Open Chapter’ format at most general aviation events nationwide, to allow pilots who don’t have chapters in their communities yet to sample what the IMC Club is all about,” said IMC Club President Radek Wyrzykowski. Instructors from SAFE, the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators, also will be at the show with their Pilot Proficiency Project, offering training sessions in a Redbird FMX full-motion simulator.
The SAFE instructors have modified the project since its debut at EAA AirVenture, based on pilot feedback — each one-hour session will comprise a 15-minute pre-briefing, 30 minutes in the simulator, and a 15-minute debriefing; scenarios in the simulator can be flown with either a legacy panel (i.e., “steam gauges”) or a G1000 panel; and pilots can choose which two of the 11 SAFE scenarios they’d like to fly. Training sessions will be offered Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Pilots are urged to sign up early on the day of the session to reserve a slot.
