The Weekender: Bargain Hunting, Mountain Flying

Eagle Roost Airpark

It might be winter for much of the U.S., but at Eagle Roost Airpark in Aguila, Ariz., it’s predicted to be 77 degrees and sunny this weekend — nice weather for browsing at a fly-in flea market. The Saturday event, one of the many that pilots can find via the free SocialFlightwebsite or app, will provide bargains for buyers looking to buy avionics, hangar-sale items, or whole airplanes. Both buyers and sellers are welcome. Hot dogs and soda will be for sale, and airpark homes on the market will host open houses. For hardy down-east pilots who don’t mind winter weather, the Maine Aviation Forum is set for Saturday, 10 to 4, at Knox County Regional Air Park in Owls Head, Maine. The event gathers leaders from Maine’s aviation community to share ideas and plan activities to promote general aviation in the state.

Mountain flying requires its own set of pilot skills, including dexterity in crosswind landings. At Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport, in Denver, pilots can take a seminar this Saturday morning from Brad Whitsitt, the creator of the X-Wind crosswind flight trainer. Whitsitt will offer a review of accident statistics, explain the two top tips for avoiding crosswind accidents, and wrap it up with Q&A. You can search for more events that fit your own parameters at the SocialFlight website, or if you are organizing an event, you can post it there.
