The Weekender: Choose Crowds, Or Solitude

0

This weekend’s roster of events for pilots, listed online by SocialFlight, includes something for everyone, whether you prefer crowds and action or finding your way to an out-of-the-way airport on the edge of the wilderness. For those who haven’t yet been to a Sporty’s fly-in, you have a chance every Saturday, all year-round, and you can expect a free hot dog between noon and 2 p.m. The world’s largest pilot shop, a growing flight school, and plenty of camaraderie can be found at the Clermont County field in Cincinnati, Ohio. If you prefer a loud and spectacular airshow, you can find one at the Warriors Over Wasatch Open House, at Hill Air Force Base in Utah. The USAF Thunderbirds and a long list of others will perform, and admission is free. The event website had no instructions for general aviation aircraft to fly in, though, so if you want to fly to the show, check first.

For those who prefer quiet, mountains, and forests, the Boundary County Airport is nestled on the northern edge of Idaho, close to huge national parks and the Canadian border. They’re hosting a Huckleberry Pancake Fly-in Breakfast on Saturday, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. A $5 donation fills your plate and goes to support flight scholarships for local students. Closer to the East Coast, all women and girls ages 8 and up are invited to go for a free ride in an airplane on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Charlottesville-Albermarle Airport in Virginia. More events, in your neighborhood and across the country, are updated daily on SocialFlight‘s free website and app.
