The Lightspeed Aviation Foundation has named its grant recipients for 2014. The nonprofit groups, which will receive grants up to $10,000, are chosen based on online voting from the aviation community. "The Pilots Choice voting and awards have introduced us all to dozens of worthy charities and amazing people that are making a significant impact around the world," said Allan Schrader, president of Lightspeed Aviation, in a news release. "Awarding these aviation charities provides the opportunity to advance their individual cause and together expand awareness and appreciation for aviation." This year's top award, $10,000, went to Pilots N Paws, which promotes the use of GA aircraft to help transport animals in need. The grant will help to fund the group's participation in various aviation events.

The other top grant recipients are: New Tribes Mission, an award of $8,000 toward an airplane for missionary aviation support in Papua New Guinea; and $6,000 to the Ninety-Nines for outreach and new programs. Five more groups received grants from $2,000 to $5,000: The Academy of Model Aeronautics, the Civil Air Patrol, Mission Aviation Fellowship, Angel Flight West, and Patient AirLift Services. The winners were announced last week at the Flying Aviation Expo in Palm Springs, California. Nominations and grant applications for the 2015 Pilots Choice Awards are available at the foundation's website. Aviation nonprofits committed to growing the pilot community or to compassionate service are eligible to apply.
