The seaplane splash-in event has been cancelled for this year's Sun 'n Fun fly-in, officials said on Wednesday, because of heavy rains that have flooded the site. The water level at Lake Agnes, at Fantasy of Flight, in Lakeland, Florida, is more than two feet above normal, flooding the dock and the ramp, and causing problems with hidden obstructions. "This decision does not come lightly and was made after a recommendation from the Sun 'n Fun Seabirds chairman and discussions with Seaplane Pilots Association leadership and others," according to a news release from the show organizers. The Sun 'n Fun fly-in is coming up April 21 to 26.
According to the local Ledger news, Lakeland Linder Regional Airport recorded 5.65 inches of rain in February, which is 2.65 inches above the average. The rain raised water levels in lakes, rivers and canals in the region. The Sun 'n Fun seabirds team is working on a slate of alternative activities for seaplane enthusiasts who attend the show, including a Saturday night dinner prior to the evening airshow and fireworks. "Though we sincerely regret having to make this decision," said John Leenhouts, president of Sun 'n Fun, "we always put safety first and foremost."
