Ann Arbor, MI -- The Michigan Flyers, a non-profit flying club at the Ann Arbor Municipal Airport, is hosting events on March 6 - 8 to celebrate Women of Aviation Worldwide Week. On March 6 and 7, the club will host field trips at the airport for local middle and high school students. Students will meet flight instructors, aviation professionals and air traffic controllers, with introductions to the basics of aerodynamics and meteorology. Students will also participate in tours of an air traffic control tower, aircraft cockpits, and a model rocket launch. On Saturday, March 8, from 10am to 2pm, the club will host an open house for members of the public. This event is designed to introduce women of all ages to the joys and career opportunities of aviation. ! Women and girls who haven't yet flown in a small airplane will have the opportunity to take discounted introductory flights with club flight instructors. Many local aircraft will be on display, along with food and hot beverages to help keep everyone warm. ! Michigan Flyers is a non-profit flying club and a cornerstone of Ann Arbor's aviation community since the early 1900s. Originally founded as a University of Michigan student organization, today's club membership is composed of students, professionals, and aviation enthusiasts. ! The club has a vibrant history of aviators: some have proceeded to fly with the Blue Angels and international airlines. Michigan Flyers celebrates a long tradition of female aviators, yet women make up only about 6% of pilots nationwide and many girls do not think of aviation as a potential career. The pilots at the Michigan Flyers seek to encourage more women and girls to become involved in aviation. Learn more at www.michiganflyers.org. !
