Saab's second GlobalEye multi-role surveillance aircraft successfully completed its first test flight on Thursday. As seen in the video below, the aircraft departed from Saab's facility in Linkping, Sweden, at 11 a.m. local time and remained in the air for 2 hours, 54 minutes. The GlobalEye, which is based on the Bombardier Global 6000, is designed for missions such as search and rescue, border surveillance and military operations.
"Today's successful first flight is another major step for GlobalEye. We received the initial contract in late 2015, completed the maiden flight with the first aircraft in March 2018 and now we have the second aircraft in the air just over nine months later," said Saab's Head of Business Area Surveillance Anders Carp. "This is the kind of efficiency that signifies Saab."
According to Saab, the GlobalEye is equipped with a suite of advanced sensors including the Erieye ER airborne radar and is suitable for air, maritime and ground surveillance. The company says the aircraft offers "increased detection range and over 11 hours of operational endurance." The launch customer for the GlobalEye will be the United Arab Emirates.
The past ten months have been amazing for #GlobalEye with the roll out in February, first flight in March and today the second aircraft flew for the first time. More: https://t.co/yzSJVJ7qkQ #avgeek pic.twitter.com/khhVPYCTf2
