Premier Aircraft Sales is a well-known broker and mod house in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and the company's latest project is called the Premier Edition Dakota. It's a spinner-to-tail refurbishment of the Piper Dakota, a real favorite among aircraft owners and buyers who want to carry a lot more than a standard Cherokee can haul and go a little faster while they're at it.

Beautifully done refurbishment, but I still feel like all of these refurbishment projects have one critical flaw. The moment you fly it away from the shop, you have a nice, up-to-date 30+ year old airframe. Unless you're buying a plane that you never intend to sell, or at least hold on to for 15, 20 years, they just won't hold their value. You'd be lucky to get above half the purchase price on the used market if you tried to sell the thing the day after you bought it.

If I were in the market for a new airplane (ha!), and I had a crystal ball that told me it I would keep it for the next 30 years, it would be a compelling alternative to new.

But realistically, I just don't see how the market for these restorations is anything but a niche. Most people are looking for airplanes in the $50k-$100k range, not $200k-$300k.
