Garmin Weather Receiver Flight Trial

The market may be flooded with ADS-B weather receivers, but the market is also seeing a new generation of subscription-based portable SiriusXM weather receivers. The latest one comes from Garmin-the GDL51-which finally completes the weather interface on the company's aera660 portable GPS, plus it works with the Garmin Pilot tablet app. In this video, Aviation Consumer magazine Editor Larry Anglisano takes a close look at the new receiver on the bench and in the air.

With the new ATP engine still in development, GE continues to market its line of H80 turboprop engines meant to compete with Pratt & Whitney's PT6. GE's Matt Garas gave AVweb a tour of the new engines at the NBAA show in Last Vegas in 2015.

TKM Offers A Slide-in Replacement For KX155

Seizing on the robust niche of replacing outdated avionics with easy-to-install replacements, TKM has finally rolled out its drop-in swap for the venerable Bendix King KX155. TKM Operations Manager Vic Casebolt told AVweb at Sun n Fun its MX155 replacement unit, under development for the past three years, will be ready to ship in May. Price has not been fixed, but Casebolt cited a target of around $4,000.

Sandel Avilon Flight Deck Demo

A couple of years ago Sandel Avionics promised that its Avilon modular integrated flight deck would be the cost-effective and simple retrofit the industry has been waiting for. At the NBAA convention in Orlando, Florida, this week the company announced that it will begin shipping the Avilon (initially for King Air applications) in the first part of 2019. It also guaranteed a fly-away price of $175,000-significantly less than the competition. Jet Shades Tinted Window Panels

A challenge in some cabin-class airplanes is balancing the temperature between the cockpit and the rear cabin, or even keeping the cockpit cool even when the air conditioning is running. A company called Jet Shades found a solution with its innovative removable tinted window panels. They require no FAA approvals because they don't modify or even touch the existing windows, plus they can be kept in place during flight.
