FAA Implements New Recreational Drone Restrictions

The FAA published a notice in the Federal Register on Friday stating that it is implementing several changes for recreational drone fliers that were mandated by Congress in the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018. The notice sets out eight statutory conditions recreational drone users must meet, including requiring recreational drone users to obtain prior authorization from the FAA before flying in controlled airspace around airports.

Aerial Mapping Of Hurricane Damage Underway

The National Geodetic Survey (NGS) Remote Sensing Division is working to collect aerial imagery of the damage caused by Hurricane Florence in the last week. Depending on weather conditions, NGS has been attempting two survey mission a day to locations identified by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and other state and federal organizations since Saturday.

Maduro Survives Drone Assassination Attempt (Updated)

Venezuelan authorities said late Sunday that they thwarted an attempted assassination of President Nicolas Maduro by two explosive-laden drones. The authorities said they had detained six people in connection with the attack in which assailants flew two drones, each packed with about 2.2 pounds of C-4 explosive. The military said it defeated one of the drones electronically and the second crashed into an apartment building two blocks away from where Maduro was speaking to hundreds of troops.

GPS Interference Concerns Revived

An attempt to launch a high-speed cellular network that raised alarm over GPS interference was squelched by federal regulators back in 2012, but now the same company is proposing a new network, and GA advocacy groups have banded together to oppose it. Ligado Networks, formerly known as LightSquared, claims its technology has improved, and will disrupt GPS signals only within 500 feet of its transmission towers.
