Four individuals have been chosen to be added to the National Aviation Hall of Fame, the organization has announced. The four will be formally enshrined in a ceremony to be held in October in Dayton, Ohio. The late Robert Hartzell is honored for his work in propeller technology, and the late Abe Silverstein, a mechanical engineer, is recognized for his contributions to supersonic aircraft and the Apollo space missions. Brig. Gen. Robert L. Cardenas flew in combat in Europe and Southeast Asia, and also worked as test pilot for the B-29 and XB-49 flying wing, and as operations officer on the X-1 program. Also joining the roster is Eugene “Gene” Kranz, best known for his work as NASA flight director during the Apollo 13 mission.

The nonprofit National Aviation Hall of Fame has named new members every year since 1962, when the Wright brothers were the first two to be honored. Each year, a nominating board comprising more than 120 aviation professionals selects a handful of air and space pioneers to be recognized for their achievements. The new members will be honored with a black-tie dinner and ceremony on Friday, Oct. 2, 2015, at the National Aviation Hall of Fame Learning Center and the adjacent National Museum of the United States Air Force, in Dayton.
