Maybe Marion Blakey should give the same speech to her staff as she does to others. As the FAA administrator was pledging more runways to a convention of airport managers, city officials in Holland, Mich., were trying to figure out what a delay in funding from the FAA will mean to their runway project. The regional office of the FAA promised to pay the majority of the $18 million project at the Tulip City Airport but budget problems may force a delay in delivering some of the funds. That may mean doing the work in phases, although city staff are trying to find ways to keep it moving. Meanwhile, in Salt Lake City, Blakey was preaching to the choir when she told about 1,000 delegates to the Airports Council International conference that the public needs “more planes, flying closer together, more safely.” She said 12 new runways are planned in the next six years. We’re not sure if she was counting the one in Holland.
