For Antique Airplanes, Blakesburg, Iowa Is The Place To Be

3

Blakesburg, Iowa, is not just the center of U.S. it’s also the center of the universe for antique airplanes of all stripes. And every August—after AirVenture—they hold a fly-in to commemorate interesting airplanes you’ll see nowhere else. In this short video, our own Paul Berge introduces the Antique Airplane Association and the Airpower Museum. This video was part of an early episode of Side Roads, a Public Television program that featured living in Iowa. This year’s AAA event, the 50th anniversary, will be held Aug. 29 through Sept. 4. For more, see the association’s website.

  1. Great to see Paul Berge in a video! First time I’ve ever seen him in a video.
GREAT PRESENTATION AND “STAGE PRESENCE”! Maybe it’s because he is performing in a place he knows well–IOWA.

Some commenters on this site have suggested that Berge and Bertorelli are really “one and the same”. (It IS true that “You never see them at the same time!”)

    Let’s have more–OF BOTH!

  2. Not an inexpensive event. Also if you are not a member don’t show up. There was a writer for the AMA magazine that wanted to go. They refused to allow access. He offered to pay for a membership as he had driven many hours to get there. They refused to allow him to sign up. Doesn’t sound like a friendly group to outsiders.

  3. It is advertised as an invitation-only event, By the Members, For the Members (and their guests). I flew in with a fellow pilot in 2013 in his Citabria, 105 that day and the crowd was nonexistent. We were not members but they allowed us to join, but things may have changed. We thought it was a great event and worth our time, dollars, and sweat to enjoy it for several hours. Find a member to tag along with or join before September gets close.
