A Safe Landing For Two Eagles Balloon

The Two Eagles balloon pilots have landed safely in the ocean about four miles off the Baja coast near La Poza Grande, their ground crew reported Saturday morning. “The pilots made a controlled descent to a gentle water landing,” the team wrote in an update. “The balloon is stable and still inflated and the pilots are fine.”Troy Bradley and Leonid Tiukhtyaev launched from Japan a week ago. The flight has surpassed the distance and duration records for their class of aircraft.

As the pilots descended for a landing, winds at the lower levels turned parallel to the coast, the team wrote, “which made it more prudent for the pilots to execute a landing in the water.” Mexican authorities are cooperating fully and the Coast Guard is en route to the balloon. The team said they expect to recover the pilots and tow the capsule to shore.
