Short Final: Final Destination

4

I was departing ATL 10 or so years ago. As you get to the end of the ramp, you contact north or south (as appropriate) ground control giving call sign, ramp (there are 9) and ATIS information. It was late evening after most of the flights had departed, a time when maintenance crews often tow planes to reposition them for various purposes. We had just switched from ramp control frequency to ground control. The ground controller, being proactive, saw an aircraft under tow:

Atlanta Ground: “Aircraft under tow approaching 3 North, where are you heading?”

Deep female voice: “Straight to hell if I don’t change my ways. But right now I need to get this plane to the City Hangar.”

That is probably my favorite exchange in my long (37-year) flying career.
