Florida Mayor Wants No Such MAX

25

Boeing’s challenges returning the beleaguered 737 MAX now include Mark Bogen, mayor of Broward County, home to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood airport, who wants to prevent the 737 MAX from using the airport in his county.

“Based on the two crashes of the 737 Max 8, Boeing needs to assure the public that the safety features are in place.” Bogen says he will insist Boeing make a number of “repairs” that include modifying the MAX’s Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) so that pilots can “turn it off.”

“If they don’t, I am going to go to my commissioners. I am going to go to other mayors, as well, of other cities and seek to ban that plane from landing at Ft. Lauderdale Airport. We will do whatever we can within our power to seek that plane from not landing at the airport here in Ft. Lauderdale.”

Bogen can, of course, threaten to restrict the MAX from FLL but the FAA will probably take umbrage over such a loss of authority on aviation matters. And he might want to advise Southwest Airlines, which has 63 flights a day to and from FLL, and is the largest single user of the MAX in the U.S.

    • “Broward County’s new mayor is Mark Bogen, selected by his fellow commissioners Tuesday.
He replaces Commissioner Beam Furr in the position, which is largely ceremonial but serves as the face of the county. Bogen had served for the past year as vice mayor.”
Ah. Largely ceremonial. That explains it.

    • If you consider Fort Lauderdale as $thl Florida town I have 95% of American towns that smell just a little worse! I agree this flapper mouth is just that, but your comments are not much better than his…

  1. Who would have guessed that Mayor Bogen is an aeronautical engineer???
I look forward to reviewing the mayor’s “repairs” specifications. It should be a fascinating and educational read.

  2. Mayor Bogen has been practicing law for 30 years and as the managing partner of the Bogen Law Group which focuses on the representation of condominium and homeowner associations big and small. He is also well known for his legal expertise in a variety of securities, consumer and anti-trust class actions lawsuits.

    • And the Bogen family tree has slave owners and klan members. I’m beyond tired of these self righteous Southern Democrats lecturing people on “what’s good for the public”.

Threatening USA based corporations for political reasons (or donations?) is as corrupt as it gets.

      • If your family has been in the country long enough (as both sides of my family have) you will find civil war heros and slave owners. It’s just how it is.
The so-called Mayor (which is described as a ‘largely ceremonial’ position) has no power other than to flap his mouth. Which makes him exactly the same as every other politician.

  3. Not only is this guy a hack politician, he is a lawyer working for homeowner groups ( HOAs / Associations). We all know how great most of them are and what bullies they can be trouncing all over individual homeowners. He can have no possible goal here other than some political grand standing. “Oh look at me! Me! Me! So how brave i am standing up for my constituents against bad old Boeing”. Sheesh.
Boeing messed up bad with the entire MCAS debacle, fact. Once the MAX gets released to operate by the FAA, there is little to no chance at all that it will be a problem child anymore. Of course, it’s reputation is now forever tarnished. Pretty much like the British Comet of yore. Politicians like this idiot need to stay out of the tiff, the issue will be decided by the travelling public. They, of course, will “forget” soon enough but at first there will be some reticence to ride on the Max. The travelling public will be the final judge.

  4. This is the same county that brought us shady election results, and the election official, Brenda Snipes gets canned. They brought us the Parkland Shootings and the sheriff, Scott Israel gets canned. Both of these officials were held accountable for leadership failings. Now the Mayor showing bad leadership judgement, next he’ll want to eliminate large soft drinks. Maybe the FAA could be tasked with fixing all of the problems in the governing of Broward county.

  5. Monkey see, monkey do. There has been much political aggrandizing over the Boeing MAX series crashes by Senators, Congresspeople, “authoritative experts” and national talking heads. Since his law firm specializes in securities, consumer and anti-trust class action lawsuits, plus representing HOA’s that surround the Ft. Lauderdale airport, this MAX saga is like throwing meat to a junkyard dog. Soon, he will be another aviation “expert” showing his aeronautical “wisdom” gleaned from an intern’s Google internet search of all things MCAS. Now that he has thrown his mayoral hat in the ring of condemning Boeing MCAS politicians, the remaining herd mentality mayors whose jurisdictions include major airports are soon to follow. This is modern leadership at it’s best.

  6. I am always amused when I see plaintiff attorneys pontificate on matters about which they know little or nothing. This is just another case. I’m sure the FAA will bow to his demands. (Not!!)

This is just another case of the ignorant grandstanding for the gullible and stupid. He must be facing reelection and needed an issue to stir up the electorate.

  7. Wow!
Such an innacurate, unreliable, unhelpful, un-actionable comment from someone purported to be a democratically elected official.

If this is the mayor of a major City in Florida, all is lost. How uninformed, shallow, reckless, stupid comment that is.

I’m truly sorry for Floridians. Guys, please review your votes. This guy is Stupid, un-informed, un-based, biased, prejudiced, and has no credibility to make such a strong affirmation.

Mr. Bogen, please get some education. The FAA has been doing a tremendous job. Boeing has thousands of people working to make this right. Please do not allow emotions to get in the way of informed, educated, un-biased, opinions to help you make a good decision for the area under your jurisdiction.

This is not a simple matter, and it requires studying, information, and education to make a good decision.

    May cooler heads prevail!

  8. Political grandstanding and foul-mouthing appears to become the new norm in my former homeland. It seems as if just yesterday we used to be a people of united Americans. Ah, the good old days.

  9. Dem or Rep, neither, a self-promoting drum beating money bags flapper mouth independent who allegedly poured out $386,000 of his own money to beat out four Dems. Seems to be the flavor of the atmosphere these days. Assuming he’s as stupid as a fox I’m wondering how that much and more is going to find it’s way back in his pocket.
As for the MAX, honestly, I’m choosing not to fight my way to the front of the line to fly on the, ‘MAX’.
