This is a scan of an old picture my grandfather, R. W. Albright, took in Miami during a visit in 1937. The aircraft at center is Sikorsky S-42-B, aka the Bermuda Clipper, NC-16735. She was destroyed when the Japanese invaded Hong Kong the same day they bombed Pearl Harbor. Copyrighted photo by R. Albright. Submitted by Ray Albright.
PICTURE OF THE WEEK: Pan American Base, Miami, FL, 1937![](https://www.avweb.com/uploads/2023/08/Classic-Piper-Cub-facing-the-Setting-Sun-560x420.jpg)
I took this picture a few months ago as the sun was setting at KFDK. It was next to the self service gas pumps as I was walking out to my rental aircraft. Taken with a Canon SD880 point and shoot pocket camera. Photo by Paul Supan.
Classic Piper Cub Facing the Setting Sun
Photo #2 is a Super Cub, not a Classic Cub. I towed a lot of gliders behind a Super Cub.
Interesting paint scheme on the Lysander. Somehow, I don’t believe the RAF would have flown into Occupied France with that as their subdued paint. 😄
Is that a boarding platform it’s sitting on? A way for passengers, crew, maintenance people and cargo to access the aircraft out of the water–then lower it to water level?
I’ve flown multi-engine seaplanes, including the Sikorsky S-38–but have never seen a platform like this.
