  1. Shortage only at the lower end of flying jobs. The majors and top tier cargo will remain competitive.

  2. There will never be a shortage of pilots. There will only be a shortage of good candidates who are willing to fly for low pay (for the fun of it).

  3. In the not-too-distant future, robots will occupy the flight decks of almost all airliners. The robot will be in command and at times will look over at the 4 striper and say, “sit on your hands and don’t touch anything, and please don’t annoy me”. At the bottom of the scale there will be flight instructors, starving to death, fighting for their lives, and hoping that one day that they can sit next to a robot to make the big bucks.
    Pilot applicants, in Alaska, will still be foot-stomping in the cold and begging to fly in any kind of weather, at any time, 24/7, for little pay, with no questions asked. My advice would be; that the airlines and the commuters and companies pay their own way and student pilots take their money and go to college and become brain surgeons and live happily ever after. There is no pilot shortage- never was.
